Living within our fancy cages

Growing up we build ourselves fancy cages

To live in

To protect us from all things external

Some hide it behind fancy euphemisms of independence

Some deem it a necessity to keep themselves safe

For isn’t the world filled with manipulating people

People who fake love

People who lie to get what they want;

Growing up we build ourselves fancy cages

Brick by Brick;

Each brick having its own unique story

Some are of heart-break

Some of being bullied or made fun of

Some involve feeling out of place or unwelcome

Some simply about missing home

Growing up we build ourselves fancy cages

Scared of true friendships

Or of discovering love in its pristine form

We keep ourselves safe and cozy within the comfort of our cages

Why try again after having seen failure up close

Why open up when its so easy to pretend to be closed

Why go deep when everyone seems to be happy skimming the surface

For isn’t maturity all about losing one’s raw energy and taking on that refined persona

The possibility of someone being both mature and raw is unfathomable

Allowing one’s rawness to seep through their cage is what weak people who can’t control their emotions do

Or you are allowed to do it only when you have smoked something or had too much to drink

Growing ourselves we build ourselves fancy cages

For its stupid to be unique in a world obsessed with people wanting to fit in

For why push oneself to taste freedom when one can simply stay safe

Break free O’ Adventurer

Jump when you feel like

Chart your own path

Sing a tune unknown

Break a leg to the melody of your soul

Be raw

Break down that cage

Through acceptance and love, win yourself and the world

In a world obsessed with people wanting to fit in, be proudly unique
